PORT MACQUARIE HASTINGS COUNCIL SAILS PROJECT

Port Macquarie Hastings Council Street Flag Project

These flags sailed in the streets of the Port Macquarie and Wauchope CBDs during the Summer of 2019. The Bicentenary of the European settlement of Port Macquarie is fraught with mixed emotions. For some members of community it can be viewed as a time to celebrate the progress and ingenuity that can be seen within our area. For myself and many Aboriginal people, especially our traditional Birpai custodians, this time marks the beginning of great loss and suffering. I was commissioned by Port Macquarie Hastings Council to create a series of street sails to commemorate the Bicentenary. It was my main goal to design from an inclusive and ethically based framework, acknowledging the ongoing contributions of our Indigenous community and the rich culture of Aboriginal Australia, while also celebrating the natural landscape and animals found here.
